Can a Therian Be a Christian at the Same Time?
Look online, and you’re likely to see the question “Can a therian be a Christian?” pop up now and again. It can be tough to navigate a conversation about your previous lives as a therian or how your personal identity impacts your faith.
If you’re new to the conversation, therianthropy is identifying with some form of a non-human animal like a wolf therian, fox therian, or cat therian. This identity is not a religion, but more an identity you feel closely connected with.
There are ways to embrace your journey as a therian and practice your Christian faith. Plenty of Christian therians exist in the world and demonstrate that the two “ideals” can coexist harmoniously.
Does God Accept Therians?
The short answer is yes. God accepts any and all of us. After all, we were made after his image. If you believe in the God of love from the Bible, then you are considered a treasured child worthy of attention and respect.
As the Bible says in Psalm 139:14, “We are fearfully and wonderfully made.” Like any other personal identity, therianthropy is a part of God’s unique design. To say otherwise would be to believe in a harsh and unforgiving God, which doesn’t make sense to Christianity.
Being a Christian therian has nothing to do with sin or shame. Nothing in the Bible explicitly rejects anyone who identifies with non-human animals. If you believe God makes no mistakes, then your therian identity could actually be a part of his design.
You are more than welcome to live your life as a therian aligned with the underlying ideals of the Bible – first among them, to treat others the way you would be treated and not throw stones at glass houses.
Can You Be a Christian and a Furry?
While the Therian Guide is focused on therianthropy, we should address being a Christian and a furry. Therians are different from furries. Celebrating anthropomorphic animal characters through art, costumes, and fandoms has some overlap, but they are different.
However, a furry, like a therian, doesn’t interfere with anyone’s faith. You can find joy and expression in your fandom without changing how you believe or practice your faith toward other people. There is more than enough room in God’s kingdom for all.
Is Being a Therian Religious?
Therianthropy is not a religion. Therians are a personal identity where you feel closely attached or aligned with non-human traits and characteristics of animals. In general, you’ll find two forms of therians:
- Spiritual Therians: They view therianthropy through the lens of a spiritual aspect. This may include seeing theriotypes as past lives and can pose some issues when discussing reincarnation and interpreting your identity through other spiritual frameworks. Many spiritual therians experience therian shifts as a spiritual event.
- Psychological Therians: You form your identity from the mind with little spiritual components. Therianthropy is a psychological or personal identity that does not impact the faith or religion you practice.
In both cases, it is all up to you. No one can dictate how you see the world. You are your own creation. If you believe in God – then believe. It is entirely up to you as an individual. Plus, there are a lot of cool things you can do as a therian and a Christian. Why limit yourself?
Final Thoughts
Can a therian be a Christian? Absolutely. Therianthropy and Christianity can completely coexist and enrich each identity.
This topic is highly charged with personal perceptions and ideologies. Go easy on yourself. The journey to figure out who you are and where you fit into the world is full of challenges. Find the underlying solid ground you can stick to and use that to build a new concept of who you are and what you believe.
For my daughter, I keep things simple. Stick to the Golden Rule and allow yourself the freedom to learn as you grow. We can work on the rest as new challenges occur. As long as you stay true to your faith and respect your personal identity, you can be both a therian and a Christian.

FAQs
Are Christians Allowed to Believe in Evolution?
Plenty of scientists believe that God created the universe and that evolution is simply a natural process in that creation. There is nothing wrong with Christian therians to also accept the concept of evolution.
Can a Christian believe in therianthropy?
Yes, you can absolutely be a Christian and have different theriotypes. Neither conflict with one another. Wearing a therian mask doesn’t mean you are full of sin.
Is therianthropy against Christian teachings?
It’s way too easy to pick and choose different Bible verses and put them out of context to support an argument one way or another. Nothing in the Bible mentions a conflict with the idea of being a therian.
Can spiritual therians still be Christians if they reject reincarnation?
You can be a spiritual therian, and hold beliefs that may not rely on reincarnation, and still practice your Christian faith without conflict.
What is a spiritual therian?
You are a therian with some spiritual elements from your past lives or non-human/animal spirits. That belief has nothing to do with Christianity and is beloved in many cultures that also have Christian faith.
